IEEE Academy Smart Grid


The IEEE Academy on Smart Grid takes existing material about this key subject of interest and combines it with newly developed materials so the learner is guided through a logical continuous path that better ties the concepts and materials together.

The Academy is primarily for members who work in industry and need to understand new technical information quickly so they can apply it to their work.

At the completion of the IEEE Academy on Smart Grid, the learner will be able to demonstrate their new knowledge and will earn a certificate.

Technical areas

The IEEE Academy on Smart Grid will focus on the following technical areas:

  • Microgrid now available on ILN

Microgrids are considered a critical and enabling link in the transition from bulk power systems to smart distributed grids. This learning path will cover the fundamental elements of microgrid definitions, design, and analysis. First Chapter provides a comprehensive overview of microgrid concepts, functional features, and benefits, followed by examples of applications around the world as well as possible future directions. The second chapter presents models of major microgrid components, including distributed energy resources, power and communication networks, as well as static and dynamic loads. Next, the learning path discusses microgrid control, stability, and protection. The discussion includes various operation modes of microgrids, such as grid-connected and islanded modes, control hierarchies, i.e., primary, secondary, and tertiary controls, various forms of control techniques such as centralized, distributed, and de-centralized, stability classification in microgrids as well as stability tools and techniques, and protection characteristics and strategies. Finally and in the fourth Chapter, discussions pertaining to microgrid planning and energy management systems are provided. These include planning tools and techniques, typical optimization objectives in microgrids, the problems of unit commitment, optimal dispatch, and power flow, application of machine learning to microgrid optimization, and market participation of microgrids.

  • Distribution Automation now available on ILN

Distribution Automation (DA) is the foundation upon which the Smart Grid is built. This learning path will cover the basic fundamentals of the existing power distribution system, starting with an overview, and will include equipment, components, devices, applications, and functionalities of the power grid. In addition, Power Distribution System processes—planning, loading, design, operation, and maintenance—will be covered. Once the basics have been presented, the next step will discuss automating the distribution system. This includes system architecture, layers, objectives, functions, substation, and feeder automation. The course will proceed to the advanced functionalities of DA, including the role of Distribution Management System (DMS) in Smart Grid. Important aspects include major challenges and issues related to Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) integration, Microgrids, Electric Vehicles (EVs)., Distribution System (DS) optimization, interoperability, and Standards and Regulations, DS reliability indices, simulation, load flow analysis, and protection coordination. Also included are case studies and best practices in DA, modern and future DS grid attributes and characteristics, and Distribution System Operator’s (DSO) role for future grid. The course will wrap up with upcoming developments, research reports, and trends in DS Automation.
